On May 2, 1944, Al Jenkins wrote a letter to golf course architect Fred Findlay in Richmond, Virginia, which said, “Here in Elizabeth City, we are interested in a Golf Club.” As a result, the Elizabeth City Golf Club was founded and originally designed by Fred Findlay, one of the more esteemed golf course architects of his time. Building on this rich history, The Pines has recently been transformed into a magnificent 18-hole championship layout by award winning golf course architect Tom Clark of Ault, Clark and Associates.
This 7,017 yard, par 72 course winds through the Albemarle pine thickets and features elevated greens, wide fairways and large chipping areas. The four sets of tees enhance the enjoyment of the course by all players. All the greens have been rebuilt to USGA specifications and boast A1/A4 bent grass while the tees and fairways feature a new hybrid of Bermuda grass, which is more heat resistant. All the sand bunkers are new and lined to protect from erosion and discoloration. The full service practice facilities have also been completely renovated and feature target greens, fairways, chipping areas and putting green.
Though the heritage of the course has been preserved by maintaining many of the original corridors, many modern enhancements have been added to include improved drainage throughout the course, automated irrigation systems, three additional ponds and a complete network of concrete paths and curbs.
Membership at The Pines includes not only the outstanding golf course but also a host of competitive and social events for the entire family. The clubhouse features a wonderful grille and lounge with outdoor seating, Members-only lounge, dining room, men’s and ladies’ locker facilities, well-stocked pro shop and banquet facilities. And our head golf professional offers an array of lessons and clinics for golfers of all abilities.
Though the course has seen remarkable improvements, the mainstay of Membership at The Pines has not changed. The Pines is a club for all golfers….young, old, men, women and especially juniors. The Pines is for the entire family. A place to learn “the game of a lifetime”. A place to enjoy the camaraderie of friends. A place where juniors are encouraged to learn all aspects of the game from skills to etiquette to rules. A place that’s a home away from home.
